Undergraduate Research

Engaging in math research offers a range of opportunities for students interested in deepening their understanding of mathematics and contributing to the field.

How to Get Involved in Math Research

The easiest way to facilitate a research project in math is to simply talk with faculty members who you'd like to work with and see if they are amenable. These will likely be instructors you've had who already know you.Valentine Garcia

  • You might do a reading course that includes a research component (you'd design this with the faculty member). This would be for course credit as MATH1970.
  • You might consider applying to an REU (Research Experience for Undergrads) for the summer. These can be competitive! It makes the most sense to apply for the summer before your junior or senior year.
  • ICERM - here at Brown has a summer program for undergraduates!
  • Occasionally a faculty member might post a project to the Brown SPRINT/UTRA page. These could be for either a semester or a summer and there are opportunities for funding available on that website.

What do I need to take before doing research in math?

This is a hard question to answer because it depends upon the area of research. You might consult the Concentration Suggestions page to see what courses are expected for a particular area of interest. And if you know you're interested in working with a particular person, check with them!

Undergraduate Research Opportunities

If you are interested in the opportunity to do research with a faculty member, the math department offers an "independent study" or "honors conference" course. This course allows you to study material that may not be offered in a standard course, at your own pace. A professor of your choice will advise you and grade your work. Start by contacting individual faculty members to inquire on a possible research project. It is best to approach the professor you'd like to advise your independent study the semester before you want to take the course. You should discuss your goals for the course, what material or textbooks you'd like to use, and what the professor's expectations.

Many universities across the US offer REUs (Research Experiences for Undergraduates) during the summer.  The American Mathematical Society maintains a list of REUs that is updated regularly.

SPRINT Awards are a family of programs that support experiential learning by providing students with access to funding and opportunities both on campus and around the world.

Many companies and national labs offer internship opportunities for undergraduate students. SIAM maintains a vast list of internship and job opportunities.
